The White House has warned Iran that it will “respond swiftly and decisively” should Iranian allies kill or injure Americans in Iraq, as tensions rise following attacks on US diplomatic compounds.
Iran was given the powerful warning via a statement from White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders.
The statement said the US will “respond swiftly and decisively” should any Americans in Iraq get hurt in attacks which are linked to Iran.
Over the past week there have been attacks on both the US Embassy in the Iraqi capital Baghdad and US Consulate in the southern city of Basra.
Three mortar shells landed near the US Embassy, situated inside Baghdad’s highly secure Green Zone, on Friday.
