The US Justice Department on Friday ordered the detention of the Iranian tanker Grace 1 accused of smuggling oil into Syria.
This came after the authorities in Gibraltar agreed on Thursday to release the tanker after it had been holding it since early July.
The ministry said in a statement quoted by the newspaper “The Hill” US, that under the detention order, the tanker and its cargo of oil valued at $ 995 thousand, are subject to confiscation.
According to the complaint, “US law enforcement officials revealed that the tanker was using forged papers to carry out its activity, as well as the transfer of Iranian oil to Syria.”
On July 4, the Gibraltar government announced the suspension, detention and cargo of an oil tanker carrying Iranian crude to Syria.
